REGARDING SPLENDA® SWEETENER PRODUCTS:
A HEALTHY AND SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO SUGAR

Sucralose, also known as SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, has been the subject of one of the most extensive and thorough safety testing programs ever conducted on a new food ingredient and has not only met, but exceeded regulatory standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and every other regulatory authority that has reviewed the data.

The safety testing of sucralose includes more than 100 scientific studies representing more than 20 years of research. Regulatory agencies around the world have reviewed the data from these studies and found SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener to be safe for its intended use, and it is permitted for sale in more than 80 countries worldwide. For the past 16 years, SPLENDA® Sweetener Products have been used safely by millions of consumers worldwide, including pregnant and nursing women, children, and individuals with diabetes.

Providing consumers with safe and healthy choices is important. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener offers consumers a healthy and safe alternative to sugar. Excess sugar intake is associated with increased risk of obesity and other health issues. Unlike sugar, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener has no calories. This means using SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) can help reduce calorie intake, which is important for weight management. Additionally, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener is not a carbohydrate so it is a wonderful aid for people with diabetes who must monitor carbohydrate intake for blood glucose control.

McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, also reiterated that a rat study on SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, funded by the Sugar Association for use in litigation against McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, is unreliable and reaches unsupported conclusions. In July, U.S. District Judge Dale S. Fisher prevented the Sugar Association from introducing this rat study as evidence in its court case against McNeil Nutritionals, LLC. The judge found the authors' "failure to provide the requisite analytical support" meant the results of the rat study cannot be extrapolated to people and are therefore "irrelevant."

And in 2007, McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, requested a panel of independent experts to review an earlier description of the Sugar Association-funded rat study and its conclusions. The panel, comprised of experts in the areas of toxicology, pathology, endocrinology, nutrition and principles of scientific research, concluded that the study design had serious flaws and could not allow for any meaningful interpretation. Additionally, according to the panel, the conclusions were unsupported by the data presented.

McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, and the Sugar Association are currently involved in active litigation. McNeil Nutritionals, LLC, believes the claims brought by the Sugar Association are without merit, and are simply an attempt to accomplish in court what it cannot accomplish in the market.
